Pain during excercise

Hello,
i have recently started doing quite a bit of running and occassionally i am getting a pain in my chest which spreads up my shoulder and into my neck on the left side of the body.  I am nearly 20 years old and was worried in case this was a problem with my heart.  i am also mildly asthmatic and wondered if this had anything to do with it.
       Thanking you in anticipation,
                            Paul

Correct me if I am wrong, but were you not the person who made the comment to Nicole or under her post about learning how to spell? Maybe you should check your spelling of cholestral. Try
spelling it the proper way next time, CHOLESTEROL. Maybe you will not be so quick to judge others the next time around. Save
your comments for the Jerry Springer show, this is a website for
patients and familes dealing with cardiac illnesses. Sincerely,
Tammie B.

I agree with those having pains to get themselves into
a competent doctor.  My problem (being a female, I am sure)
was I was not taken seriously by some of the docs I had seen in the past.  The cardio man I see this week had better listen to me and not give me "the look".

My dad died at 39 of a sudden heart attack and his brothers were gone before their 45th birthday. My mother was found on the bathroom floor. She suffered a heart attack.  Her younger sister died last year sitting in a restaurant. She had complained about her heart for 6 months and no one did anything. (lived in another state)

I am saying all this for those who are sffering with chest pains to seek help and again with a competent physician.

I just had my first grandbaby and I want to be around a long time to enjoy him.  Life is so precious.

I will keep you all posted on my visit this week with the cardiologist.

God Bless.

I am 27 year old male that is three weeks post op. I had the Ross Procedure to fix my aortic valve and aortic aneurysm. I reccomend any of you that are worried about having a cath. not to. It is no big deal, very little feeling or discomfort. Only real discomfort is when they inject the dye into your main pumping chamber, very very warm feeling.
Now as far as having any chest pain---> you need to get your hind end into a cardiologist and have tests done. It may not be anything to worry about. But best bet is to know what is causing the pain and discomfort. Age is not any reason to avoid having tests or seeing your doc. Hell, look at me. 27 in great physical condition before I realized what my minor murmur had turned into. And faced open heart surgery just three weeks ago. But you know it has all been worth it, I will be able to return to my full lifestyle. GO TO THE DOCTOR and have your tests.

Positively,

Ben smith

Hi Bevely,

I posted that the Nitro was in my purse which I had with me in the store, but I went out to the car (sitting right outside the store) to take the Nitro. They say to sit or lie down when taking this med as you may get dizzy. I keep the Nitro where it will never be exposed to heat.  I too live in ~~~~HOT~~~ Texas.
)-: I also called my hubby from the car phone to let him know what was happening and that I was taking my first Nitro.

Thanks for asking.  Todays heat will reach 104 with Ozone Alerts again.  These ozone alerts have not helped with breathing (asthma)

Hey Lenore,
Why do you leave your Nitro in the car??? You know that the heat and light ruin the medication and when you NEED IT, you need it RIGHT now (sometimes).  You might not get to the car and if you live in Texas as I do, it would be ruined!!!!
Keep it on you, good luck....Beverly C.

cris, i'm 37 and in the exact position you are.same tests, same
results! their are some risks to the catherization, but you have
to ask yourself what risks are there if you don't have it done?
i've had chest pain for 11 years, lately both arms also ache
sometimes. i've scheduled a cath in 2 weeks, because ALL the other
tests are not as accurate.my doc. told me if he was having this
type of chest pain he would certainly have a cath, but he isn't
having chest pains,so it's up to me! scary!!!
can you breath ok when you get these pains? do you sweat? have
you tried nitro yet? doc gave me nitro wich i never tried, they
say if it takes the pain away it could be angina, who knows,we
could guess forever but never know until cath is done.
at this age I would sooner be doing other things than this kind
of stuff,good luck.

Hi John and Chris...

I too have on and off chest pain for 7 years.  Actually they would start on the right side in the liver region and cresendo to the middle upper abdomen area.  These would last anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour.  Then disappear. I do not remember sweating.  These pains were &^$%$%^%#!!!!

The last three episodes though have changed.  Now, these pains are starting in the right neck region, and quickly go to the right abdomen and now upper chest and into the jaw and teeth.

I have complained about these pains in the past to other GP's. etc. and  I have been brushed off.  I saw a cardiologist last year right after a big Cresendo pain attack.  He too was very blaze after he took an EKG (normal) and basically escorted me out his door.

I went back in that door and told him I wanted an RX for Nitro. Without looking at me, he wrote it but never explained about the Nitro. (got on the internet and learned how to take this and how sensitive this med is to light and heat, and how short lived this med is when the bottle has been opened)  Most doctors though, will inform their patients on medications.  I just happened to find an uncaring one.

The next attack, I had was sitting in my GP's office two weeks later.  He quickly orderd another EKG and this one was slightly abnormal.  He was not concerend.  I had left the nitro in another purse. ~~sigh~~

A month ago, I had another attack in the store. I quickly went to the car and took a nitro that I had in the bottle in my purse. It took the pain away in about 30 seconds.

Next week, I see another Cardiologist with a large group affiliated with a top notch hospital.
Prior to me seeing him, they  ordered lots of blood work and an Echocardiogram.  I will also bring the two EKG's that were taken last year to my appointment.

I have a lousy family history of heart disease. My father and his brothers died fairly young.

I do not want heart disease (no one does) but Peace of Mind is so important and if you do have something going on with the heart, it is best to know and be under the care of a Competent and Caring Physician.

Paul,

I've also had chest pain during exercise and while at rest. Mine is always under the breastbone in the center of the chest, very intense, crushing but only lasts seconds. At first I had it only at rest and after many tests the Cardio's attributed it to anxiety and even though I was anxious I didn't believe them because the pain felt so cardiac in nature. Then when another cardiologist thought it might be a coronary artery spasm he put me on cardizem (calcium channel blocker) and took me off the atenolol (beta-blocker) I was taking for pvc's and that's when I started to get pains while I was jogging, but again spasm-like pain. So I went to another cardio who took me off the cardizem and put me on Zebeta (another beta-blocker) and so far so good, though we still don't know why I have these pains. I've had 4 or 5 stress tests, all negative, holter monitors which showed only runs of pvc's, numerous ecg's, a high speed CAT scan of the chest which showed 0 calcium, and finally a cardiolite stress test which was also negative. Also have had an endoscopy to check for hiatal hernia which was negative. So here I am on medication without knowing what's causing the problem. I could have an angiogram but I'm only a 34 yr old male and don't want an invasive test unless it's necessary and given all the other negative tests the dr's don't really want to do it. They did offer(but didn't think I needed it) a new MRI scan that can detect soft and hard plaque in the arteries and I want to do this as an alternative to the angiogram, but since it's a new test my insurance won't cover the $1000 fee. I'm telling you all of this because I've been through years of testing with no answers and understand what you're going through. I really wish I knew whether I was in real danger or not, and would love to get off the meds if I'm o.k. My cholesterol is extremely low (130's) and my hdl/ldl ratio is also very good, but my homocysteine level is 11.0 which is on the high side. Anyone out there with any suggestion's, I would love to hear from you. I wish all of you well.

Paul,

Try not to worry to much before you have some tests done. Don't underestimate your pain or discomfort when asked by the doctor.  You could ask for an EKG, stress test, and echo.  None of these tests are anything to worry about. They should be able to rule out heart disease.  Or maybe your doctor could determine another cause of your symptoms before the tests were completed.  Whatever the case may be, don't ignore your symptoms.  Good luck.

Paul,
I am 21 years old now and started experiencing chest pain with my daily exercise (30 minutes of weight followed by a 4-mile jog) about a year ago.   It finally got so unbearable that I could not exercise more than 10 minutes at a times.  I eventually went to a cardiologist and was diagnosed with stable angina which was underlined by a supraventicular tachycardia.   With treatment, I have been able to return to my normal activities and in general feel 100% better.

My advice to you is DEFINITELY get it checked out by some doctor.   Though normally innocuous, chest pain often has a non-cardiac origin and can stem from pulmonary disorders, but you still should seek out the reason behind your.  It also can be a warning sign for a lot of life-threatening cardiac disorders, especially when it occurs after some kind of exertion (like exercise).

Good Luck and hope you feel better soon.  --Elizabeth

Good luck
John

Dear Paul,
Of course as a cardiologist I always take chest pain seriously but in a 20 year old it is less likely to be cardiac related.  However, occasionally a very young person will have heart disease and your symptoms should be checked out by your doctor.  Until then I would not exercise to the point of pain.
