Pain during heart Cath

I need some advice. I went in today 7-8-10 and had a heart cath done. I was taken into the heart cath lab and prepped for the cath. I was given 2mg of versed and 50 mg of fentyl to relax me for the test, and the doctor numbed the area up. My problem is that the meds didnt work and the cath hurt so bad and he would not give me nothing else. The nurse did feel sorry for me and give me 50mg more of fentyl still no relief. I explained to the doctor and the nurses that I have had alot of surgeries and that I need a higher does of meds for it to work for me however, he would not stop or try and numb the area up anymore. It hurt so bad. And just had a total hyster on 5-21-10 and was still sore from that, and that was explained too. Is it normal to have that much pain and no one to do nothing. Its now 12 hours later and still in alot of pain. All, the pain is where the cut was made and entered the artery. I dont understand why a doctor who already knew my history would let me hurt that bad. Please some advise what I should do? Maybe this is normal but I dont think so. The nurse told me that the numbing meds must have not worked or he was hitting a nerve. I am only 33 years old and the doctors thought I had a blockage, but it turned out it was nothing just a small artery so a heathly heart at least. I have to have a Upper EGD done every year for the past 10 years or more and always have used versed, but at a higher dose to calm me down and be able to do the test. I told my doctor all this and still I feel he hurt me bad and that scares me. Thank you for your time and help.

Thank you so much for the help. I am still in pain, its a little more than I like but im hoping after I take the bandage off and clean it which I got to do tonite, that some of the pain will ease up. Thank you again and yes, I am gonna get a new doctor if the problem comes up again. Thanks again.

I agree with heartflutters. . . I would get a different doctor. I've had 3 catheter ablations where they run 4 wires up into the heart, 2 on each side of the groin, and I didn't have that kind of pain. During my first ablation I was starting to have some chest pressure while they did the burning and my doctor told them to give me more meds. That's the last thing I remember of that time.

A good cardio will not only know your heart inside and out but will care about you as a whole person.

I have had 9 caths now, ***sig***, and the worst pain is in the groin when they insert the cath.  But the pain has always been bearable.  I am so sorry you had to go through this.  The site will be sore for a while, but should not be anything that is a bother.  If it is, call the doctor and make sure he is listening.  Take care, Ally
