Pain throughout both legs after bypass surgery

by Marco-Casilas, Dec 27, 1998 12:00AM

My mother's Aorta was blocked just below the kidneys, and had an emergency bypass surgery, about two months ago, connecting the artery by the right arm to the artery in the right leg and then to the left leg. This happened 3 days after a surgery was performed to remove part of her intestine. She is experiencing intense pain to both legs, and minimal swelling to both feet and ankles. I would like to know if this is normal? If it is, does it go away in time? If not normal, what is the cause of the pain?, and how may we treat it?
Dear Marco
No, it is not normal to have severe pain two months after this sort of bypass surgery. Assuming that the circulation was successfully restored to both legs, she should not be having any type of severe pain. You should contact the doctors who did the surgery and have them evaluate her legs to make sure the bypasses are open and functioning properly.
