Palpitations & Event monitor in teenager HELP !

by Chantillyrose, Sep 28, 2008 09:44AM
I am 15 years old and i am going to Birmingham Childrens hospital tomorow to have pick up an event monitor as i have been suffering with palpitations recently. I have been told that the event monitor is a self activated cardio memo.
I am confused because i dont know what an event monitor is, is it similar to an 24 hour holtor monitor??
Please help me at tell me what you think

Yes it is sort of like a holter monitor. (same purpose) the event monitor (we have one all of the time for my 4 year old) is a little machine and I do mean little it can fir into your palm of your hand. There are NO wires to hook up like on a holter monitor. so you can take baths or showers or what not.
The idea is when you feel a palpatation then you put the event monitor over your heart(make sure it is flat and all 4 pads are touching your chest)(it should come with instructions and pictures to show you) then once you have it in place you hit a record button on the machine.(try to lay down when you are doing this something about it records better. i know it might not be possible for you to lay flat all of the time) but make sure you are very still. when it is recording it will make a noise once the noise stops you can remove the monitor from your chest and if you can call it into the # they tell you to. you will have to place your phone on the machine(the one Christopher had, you couldn't call from a cell phone or cordless, it had to be a regular normal phone) once the reciever is in place your hit the record button and when it is finished transferring to the techn pick the phone back up and they will instruct you from there. Well they will give you instructions when you call. the ones we had to deal with were very nice.
It doesn't hurt or anything just a pain in the butt. because you have to carry it all over the place. I hope your doctor has told you that it is not a guarentee  that they will catch your palpatations you will also have this for 30 days maybe even longer..
Just a thought that if you can, teach your best friend how to use it. Why I say that is for some reason you can do it and you are with your friend then she/he will be able to help.
Oh I almost forgot you need to keep a diary of this too. for instance write down the time and date when you eat play run sleep EVERYTHING! it will be very helpful to the doctors, incase they do happen to see something. it could be one thing that is triggering your palpatations. I didn't know to keep a diary the first time when Christopher had to have one and that caused issues.
Sorry this is so long.
Good luck and don't worry you will be fine. I know it sounds overwhelming, but it really isn't that hard to work it.
Good luck and I hope I helped out
