Pathophysiological Mechanisms Involved???

by Cathy__0__0, Dec 03, 1998 12:00AM

I am doing a presentation in school on CAD. I need to explain the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the disease. Could you please explain to me how you would explain it to a patient because my time is limited in the presentation. I have to include the important info. in a short amt. of time. Also, do you know of any good visual aides I could use to show how the blood flow is retstricted? Thank you so much for your help.
Dear Cathy
The problem with coronary artery disease is due to a build-up of atherosclerotic plaque on the inside of the coronary arteries; this restricts the amount of blood flow to the heart and can result in angina (chest pain). The plaque causes disruption of normal blood flow and this can predispose to superimposed blood clot formation - this is what results in a heart attack. The American Heart Association has some educational info that might be useful for your talk (www.amheart.org).
I hope this information is useful. Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provided specific diagnoses and therapies.  Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck!
