Pericardial Cyst Results

Dear Sir

I received a CT Scan today with contract dye to observe Pericardial Cyst.  As usual the Drs are in such a rush there is no time for questions.  The results read:

"There is a soft tissue density mass in the anterior mediastinum that is positioned eccentrically to the right with respect to the heart.  It measures 7 cm sagittal x 5 cm transverse x 2 cm in dept and measures 20 hounsfield units.   It is homogeneous and although it may represent a fluid filled pericardial cyst, the post-contract density is greater than that of simple fluid.  There is no perceptible wall, and no internal architecture.  There is no surrounding lymphadenopathy.  Comparison to the prior examination of January 2009 reveals it to be essentially unchanged.  Therefore it likely represents a stable pericardial cyst. There is no hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy."

1. Is this not large?
2. Can it be dangerous?
3. Should it not be removed.

I faxed this report to my cardiologist who said there is no cause for concern.  Do you recommend a second opinion?

many thanks

Elizabeth

No no further workup is necessary if this in fact is a pericardial cysts. Ask the cardiologist how sure he is that this is indeed a pericardial cyst: if he is sure, no further workup is necessary.
