Pericardial valves

by Sherrie T., Sep 01, 1999 12:00AM

Dear Doctor,

My 64 yr old mother has been told she needs to have a AVR.  She is considering a pericardial valve.  We can not find much info. of this type of valve replacement on the internet.  Can you please share what you know about the pros, cons and success of
this type of valve, verses the mechanical and pig or cow.

Thank you, Sherrie

Dear Sherrie,

the "pericardial" valve is in fact the porcine or pig valve also known as the Carpentier Edwards valve.  This is a very successful valve and does extremely well.  this is the standard valve that  we usually use here at CCF.

You should discuss the pros and cons as well as success with the surgeon who will be performing the surgery.
