When I was 20(13 years ago)I started having terrible rythmn problems wth my heart.
I was then incredibly fit,ran the London Marathon two yrs previous and would cycle or run EVERY day.It took 6 months of visits to my doctor complaining of my problem before I was prescribed Inderal ( I think 30mg a day- but it was a long time ago!)
This medication was fantastic, in alleviating the symptoms, although I avoided going back to training for fear of recuurance.
Then about nine years ago the Inderal was not as effective and my symptoms returned- PVC's,PAC's (by the way these showed up on a 24hr tape I had done before first beta-blocker prescribed). My doctor then prescribed Sectral 200mg (I would take on average 200mg every day-sometimes two)
The Sectral made me feel well again, and about five yrs ago I even started running again daily.
I even managed to reduce the dose to 100mg once a day.
Then about 18 months ago things got suddenly worse. My heart rythmn felt much more disturbed not fast because of the daily beta-blocker medication but horribly irrgular.Pounding missed/extra beats - spasms of flutterings for 15/30 secs. This was happening every day and a lot.
Anyway I have seen a Cardiologist had another 24hr tape done who tells me My heart is structurally sound but just irregular in beating.
I have been taking up to 400mg of Sectral daily,I cannot exercise as brings on chronic symptoms I feel like an invalid and since January cannot work proprley as any minor stress brings on irregular beating too.My doctor prescribed me Oxazepam 10mg tablets to help my axiety on the problem which no doubt fuels the whole situation and I find these are giving me more relief than the Sectral which I have now stabilized to 100mg 3 times a day.
I am now very desperate i have a wife and two children to support and feel I am just a burden on everyone.
Has constant beta blocker (daily) use damaged my heart?
Why haven't I had more tests done?
I cannot even go out in the Sun now because heat causes mt irregular beating to get worse
My heart feels very weak- 60 per min ( due to bb's)and irregular all the time.
PLEASE advise me what to do Ive tried Sotolol 80mg a day but felt NO better So am back on Sectral
What are the long term impications of taking/mixing tranquilizers and beta blockers?
Please,Please help me- Thank you in anticipation Andy..
