Post-CABG long-term expectations

Post-CABG long-term expectations

I had quadruple bypass surgery (w/ mammary artery and saphenous veins) 6 years ago and am now 48 years old. My BMI is average, I exercise regularly and my general health and cholesterol/lipid numbers are good. I have had a couple of stress tests over the last few years that have been both been normal.
I have read that vein grafts typically last 7-10 years. What should I expect down the road?

good question.  here's what answers.com says:

Success rate of coronary artery bypass graft surgery
About 90% of patients experience significant improvements after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Patients experience full relief from chest pain and resume their normal activities in about 70% of the cases; the remaining 20% experience partial relief. In 5–10% of coronary artery bypass graft surgeries, the bypass graft stops supplying blood to the bypassed artery within one year. Younger people who are healthy except for the heart disease do well with bypass surgery. Patients who have poorer results from coronary artery bypass graft surgery include those over the age of 70, those who have poor left ventricular function, or are undergoing a repeat surgery or other procedures concurrently, and those who continue smoking, do not treat high cholesterol or other coronary risk factors, or have another debilitating disease.

Long term, symptoms recur in only about 3–4% of patients per year. Five years after coronary artery bypass graft surgery, survival expectancy is 90%, at 10 years it is about 80%, at 15 years it is about 55%, and at 20 years it is about 40%.

Angina recurs in about 40% of patients after about 10 years. In most cases, it is less severe than before the surgery and can be controlled by drug therapy. In patients who have had vein grafts, 40% of the grafts are severely obstructed 10 years after the procedure. Repeat coronary artery bypass graft surgery may be necessary, and is usually less successful than the first surgery.

So...kinda vague, huh?  my hubby is post cabg 8 years.  he didn't change his lifestyle and now he's in trouble.  arteries downstream of the saphenous graft are 70% clogged, and the doc says too risky to cath thru the grafted path to stent the new clogs.  will find out tomorrow if a 2nd cabg surgery might be possible.  interestingly, the saphenous graft is still 100% clear.  above data says at 15 years your 50/50, but you know what?  it's different from person to person, I think.  depends on your individual anatomy & physiology, lifestyle, and genetics.  i'm afraid my guy will die before my son graduates from high school.  i'm also afraid that my son might be the one to find him dead.  and obviously, i'm just afraid he'll die period.  i don't think there are any hard and fast answers about life expectancy, and relying on averages doesn't do much good in my opinion (unless you have financial decisions to make).  i think you just do everything within your power that you can do to give yourself your best chance of long term survival.  in addition to living a healthy lifestyle physically, i think it's just as important to live healthy mentally as well.  figure out how to deal with any anxiety and depression associated w/the disease.  think positive and live the serenity prayer.  mind over body, plus you make each day count.  better to live one year happy than 10 years miserable.  kind of gives profound meaning to the saying, 'this is the day the lord hath made.  let us rejoice and be glad in it.'

best wishes.
