Pre-op EKG results

by rhjm, Dec 14, 2002 12:00AM
I was going to have a Smith's fracture ORIF. Pre-op the hospital told me my EKG showed Normal Sinus Rhythm, 88 bpm, T Wave Abnormalities, Consider Anterior Ischemia, Abnormal EKG, so surgery was postponed until I see a cardiologist next week. My EKG from three years ago was done on a different type of machine in my physician's office (no computerized diagnosis written on top) and there were changes upon comparison. I am 55, female, just beginning menopause, non-smoker, no alcohol for past 12 years, active lifestyle with work, home, travel, and family. Do not have any clinical symptoms of ASHD/CAD-- or any other present health concerns aside from the FX. Last total cholesterol in 11/2002 was 221, HDL 68.  Normally BP in 115/75 range. Take only one med for some bouts with depression--- Zoloft 50 mg. Father died at 59 of a massive MI. I was diagnosed with a congenital heart murmur as a child, but haven't heard anything about it since although I always mention it if giving a history. Had surgery in 1982, no problems. Had 2 childbirths, too. Could you tell me a little more about this diagnosis? I really need to have this arm fixed ASAP. Thanks so much for your help.

Dear rhjm,

Sorry to hear about your arm fracture. During your pre-operative evaluation you were found to have an ECG showing evidence of anterior ischemia. The finding on the ECG suggests that there may be a blockage in the heart artery supplying the front wall of the heart. Your cardiologist may want to perform a stress test to further evaluate the walls of the heart for evidence of blockages. If significant abnormalities are found on the stress test your cardiologist may want to perform a heart catheterization. The heart catheterization allows us to  visualize the coronary arteries for blockages.

However, from what you have told me there is a suggestion of a blockage not a diagnosis. Following the cardiac evaluation your doctor should be able to tell you whether or not a significant blockage is present and make a recommendation regarding your arm surgery.  Hope everything works out well.

Thanks for your question,
