Preganancy in woman with mechanical heart valve

by YoginiL, Jan 04, 2007 12:00AM
I had a mechanical heart valve replacement (mitral) six years ago and am now pregnant (at age 45 no less; pregnancy was unplanned). I am halfway into the pregnancy and have been on oral anticoagulation (coumadin) throughout  and have had no problems with the pregnancy thus far and no other underlying health problems. I am well aware of the risks to both myself and the baby, but I'm in it for the long haul. I am being managed by several docs (military medicine) and so far multiple ultrasounds are indicating normal development and no obvious evidence of fetal defects.

Just curious, are there any women out there with mechanical valves who have had successful deliveries and given birth to healthy children?  If so, I'd love to hear about your experiences.
Thanks!

I just wanted to say congratulations to you!  Though unexpected, what a wonderful surprise.  I wish the very best to you and your little baby!

I have heard of women having very successful pregnancy outcomes following valve replacement surgeries.  When I was searching for pregnancy info about a year ago, I actually found a site where they were discussing your situation.  If I think of it, I will post it here :)

Thanks so much for your words of encouragement.  I certainly hope that the baby and I end up being one of the success stories.

Just saw your post.  I hope you're still reading the boards : )

Check out www.valvereplacement.com.  There are people on that forum who have had successful pregnancies with valve issues.

Congratulations!!
