Pulmonary Hypertension

by Kandytoes, Mar 14, 2008 10:27PM
Kandice, 25 yrs old 120 lbs. I have always been fit but have been experiencing fast heart rate, heart palpitations ranging from mild to extreme chest pains, light headedness, short of breath, fainting spells for as long as I can remember.  Since 13 yrs of age, I have been put on Holter monitors (24-48 hours heart monitors), brain scans, numerous blood tests, thyroid tests, urine tests etc. I have always been told that there is nothing wrong and that my heart and everything else is fine with a few abnormalities here and there but within the range of normal.  The doctors have said that I just have an elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, with hypertension but it’s nothing to worry about and high cholesterol.  As I got older they just kept sending me for more tests one after another since the episodes didn’t go away.  The doctors then ordered blood tests after blood tests along with Holter monitors, ECG, EKG, Eco Cardiogram, Stress Tests, MPI (Myocordial Perfusion Imaging), Heart Imaging with Cardiolite and Myoview etc.  All these tests and the only thing that the doctor can tell me is that I have sinus tachycardia with a fast heart rate coupled with high blood pressure and high cholesterol and should go on a diet.  I have landed myself in the hospital numerous times thinking that I was having a heart attack or a stroke because I would have all the signs such as pins and needles, light headedness, blurry sight etc.  The cardiologist took one look at me has suggested that there is nothing serious with me and that I should just go home and live my life considering most of he’s patients are over 50 yrs old in the waiting room I didn’t even want to know what he was thinking.  I just want to be able to live my life without the fear of something terrible happening when I do have another one of the attacks while teaching or while I am alone with my very young daughter.  I have been prescribed beta blockers to lower my heart rate as well as my blood pressure, I have been taking it for about two and a half months now and for awhile I have felt better but lately the medication doesn’t seem to be working at all and the symptoms I had in the past are coming back.  The doctors has also suggested that it may just be anxiety induced but I have seen a psychiatrist and I have been told that I don’t have anxiety problems or depression

I was watching a show the other day called the mystery diagnosis from the Discovery Health Channel.  The girl on the television was showing symptoms that I have had for as long as I can remember she has also been told that there was nothing wrong with her for years.  A doctor was able to diagnose her condition, there was nothing wrong with her heart. The doctors have been focused on her heart that they have missed the big picture she was hypertensive had a fast heart rate, had fainting spells, chest pain, and shortness of breath because she had Pulmonary Hypertension what was wrong with her were the arteries leading from her heart to her lungs. The doctors didn’t diagnose her properly because the symptoms were mimicking events that would make a doctor be more focused on the heart.  A Pulmonary Hypertension affects only the arteries in the lungs and the right side of your heart. Pulmonary hypertension begins when tiny arteries in your lungs, called pulmonary arteries and capillaries, become narrowed, blocked or destroyed. This makes it harder for blood to flow through your lungs, which raises pressure within the pulmonary arteries. As the pressure builds, your heart's lower right chamber (right ventricle) must work harder to pump blood through your lungs thus the fast heart rate and hypertension, chest pain, lightheadedness, short of breath and tired.  With the heart working really hard to compensate this could eventually be causing your heart muscle to weaken and sometimes fail completely.

The damage that would be found on the heart would be the latter of what hypertension does to ones heart.  I still have to have myself checked out to see weather or not I do have this but I am still determined to find out why I am feeling the way I do.  The doctors may diagnose you with one thing but a lesson I have learned from what happened to a family member is that only you know how you feel.

I saw that show too, and it was pretty well done.  Medical care for PH has progressed since that girl first got sick.  An echo would show elevated PAP, and an EKG, while frequently overdiagnosing, would show signs of enlargement of chambers of the heart, right heart for PH.  SO, since you have had these tests and nothing is showing, I doubt you have PH.  But I would suggest you get copies of all your medical records, especially the echoes, to see for yourself.  Hypertension makes the left side of the heart increase in size, while PH can cause the right side of the heart to enlarge, and not in the early stages either.
Truthfully, many of your symptoms do go along with an anxiety disorder, like the pins and needles feeling and lightheadedness.  If you have had PH for as long as you have been having symptoms (since age 13), truthfully, untreated, you might be dead.  It is a progressive disease.  But for your own piece of mind, go ahead and contact a doctor and have another echo.
