I have moderate to severe MVR for the last 5 years or more (learned about the condtition when tested and treated for heart failure)....so I can identify with your situation.
A valve surgeon at the Mayo Clinic stated in an article he wrote that the major problem he sees is that the patient waited too long. I(f the heart is enlarged and/or if the heart is not pumping normally (lower than normal cardiac output), there is an increased risk. An operation was not advised in my situation as the heart was enlarged and cardiac output was not normal. I have no symptoms!
Repair with minimum intervention is not a very big risk, and there is a higher risk to wait so If the dx is accurate it would be a good idea to have the opertion.
Thank you for the explanation of the EKG. I already had an echo last week and it unfortunately confirmed that the regurgitation went from mild-moderate to moderate-severe.
I had a 1 yr physical a month ago and my PCP found a carotid bruit on my right side. She sent me tot he cardiologist for folow-up. He did a doppler which was normal. Then he had sent me for an enho. The last echo I had done in 2004 was to follow-up on my mitral valve. I've always gone every 2-3 years. Anyways, this echo showed that the regurg has gotten worse. Back in 2004, my doctor compared the regurg to a 3-4 on a scale of 1-10. Now it is about a 7.5 - 8. He said it's time to repair so that I do not have any complications or adverse irreversible events in the next 1-2 years. He really shocked me because I did not see that coming at all. I was literally blind sided. My husband and I thought it was giong to be another one of those " you're doing the same, we'll see you in a year" visits.
I'm really very nervous and anxious as is expected, but
Vent rate: 95 bpm...normal less than 100 at rest.
RR Interval: 627 ms.... less than 627ms
PR Interval 122 ms ....normal PR interval 120-200ms
QRS Interval 86 ms ....normal QRS duration 60-100ms
QT Interval 344 ms ...normal QT Interval 344 ms
QTc Interval 405 ms ...QTc Interval 405 ms
QT Dispersion: 52 ms....normal 38 plus or minus 14 ms.
Question: "What is a P-R-T axis? My numbers were 61, 39 and 26. The doctor forgot to explain this to"
*PRT axis 63/12/47 means that your QRS interval is in the proper axis (no deviation into an improper axis). You have 3 axis measurenents, 61, 39, 26. All are within the proper range which is -30 to +90. To understand this, you need to be familar with vector analysis. The axis is determined by which direction the electrical signals generated by your heart are travelling toward the leads of the EKG.
There are no outstanding adverse charateristics from the EKG. If there is mitral valve regurgitation, that requires an echocardiogram to assess and evaluate the condition.
