I am not a doctor, but have seen many people family and friends go through both CABG and stenting.  A person with diabetes has higher risk for the CABG in that there is a possibility of not healing after surgery.  One of our friends had mild diabetes taking only pills and had a bypass operation.  The surgeons were not able to get this heart back into his chest because of all the swelling.  Three days later, no change and he was taken off of life support.  Diabetics have a high risk for any type of surgery and with open heart surgery there are complications from infections not only from the surgery but from the tubes used after surgery.  The stents would be safer to use in a person who is diabetic.
