RF or cryoablation

RF or cryoablation

I have been diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation by my cardiologist. After 3 cardioversions this year, he believes we should do something different. I cannot tolerate the anti-arrhythmics so he is recommending Ablation. I am interested in cryoablation as from what I have read, it is less dangerous. I understand there is only a 12 month safety follow-up from the recently FDA approved Medtronic CryoAblation procedure, which is a concern - but I haven't found a lot of "happy" stories - only horror stories about RF ablation.

Any thoughts would be really helpful. I am a new to these procedures.

Thanks in advance,
Jen

Catheter ablation has been shown to be very helpful in both patients with atrial fibrillation refractory to medical therapy or in patients not able to tolerate medications designed to maintain normal sinus rhythm. In general, it is a well tolerated procedure with a fairly low rate of complications - a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that around 5% of patients treated with ablation had complications at 30 days.

Hope that this helps.
