Dear Anita:
There is interesting information about non-pharmacological treatment of atrial fibrillation listed at Jims site.  He had a surgical procedure [the Maze procedure] performed to eliminate his atrial fibrillation.
However, I would not recommend surgery for atrial fibrillation as an early step.  Only if your brother-in-law is intolerant of several different medications would it be reasonable to consider open-heart surgery.  As far as the "minimally invasive" surgery for atrial fibrillation, it is still in its infancy.
Information provided here is of a general nature.  Specific diagnoses and treatments can only be made by your doctor.  If you would like to be seen at the Cleveland Clinic, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE for an appointment with a cardiac electrophysiologist at Desk F15.
