A good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with atrial septal defect (ASD).  She had a cath done a few weeks ago.  It showed the defect at about the size of a large eraser.  Can you explain the options for surgery? Is a sternotomy the best way or is a mammary incision a good option.  If the mammary incision is used, how do you clamp the aorta?  I'd appreciate your help.  She's not able to find a lot of info here locally.

I had closure of ASD in 1983 at the age of 27.  The hole in my heart was the size of a quarter.  I also had mitral valve prolapse.  The incision was made under the right breast.  Once the ASD was repaired, I am told that the MVP also repaired itself since the proper amount of blood was now flowing through the valve.  I have had no problems relating to my ASD closure since.  I did have radiofrequency ablation for svt last month, but I was told that this was completely unrelated to my ASD. I have been told by several cardiologists and EP specialists that ASD closure is no big deal (as far as open heart surgeries go). I recovered nicely within about six weeks.  I hope this helps. Good luck! DB

I was diagnosed with ASD at the age of 65.  It was the size of a quarter and repaired with the pericardium sack.  I also have mitrovalve prolapse which the doctor doesn't seem too concerned about. Before surgery I had a very unstable heart beat.  The echocardiogram told the story.  It was repaired 5 days after diagnosis.  I have had a heart murmur my whole life but it was never checked out.  My symptom that got me into the doctor was a t.i.a. (mini stroke).  I had a problem speaking for 20 seconds and then it cleared up.  I was told that if I did not have it repaired that I may have a  "big stroke".  How I got to 65 without a real problem is a mystery.  I have 5 children all grown up.
