Spinal stenosis. He had surgery when he was 10 yrs old to open the valve. He is now 44 yrs old and needs to have the valve replaced. The
cardiacCardiac catheterization
Cardiac tamponade
Left heart ventricular angiography cath showed severe aortic stenosis with leakage. It also showed that the aorta immediately following the valve is dilated or has an aneurism. The doctor used those terms interchangeably. I am concerned about the aorta since I haven't read anyone else make reference to having this same type of problem with their valve. Is this common? The surgeon says if the aorta needs to be replaced they have a mechanical valve with an artificial aorta already attached that they would use. Is this type of surgery more complex or risky. Do you see many of these types of valves being used? The cardiologist mentioned doing an MRI to check the aorta, but the surgeon doesn't feel that it's necessary and says he can tell what needs to be done when he opens the chest. Please comment. Thank-you.

Im a 49 yr old male and on 22 Jan 99 with a terrible cold and had an xray, the
dr found a 5.5 cm on my assending aorta and my aorta valve was leaking at the
time mild to moderate. I saw a cardiologist and with a cat scan they confirmed
my problem. The cardiologist didnt feel comfortable in doing the procedure since
its a delicate procedure and refered me to Mayo Clinic St Mary Hospital to a
Dr Schaff a well known cardiologist surgeon. I had my surgery on 5 Feb 99, was
in hospital for a total of 7 days and today I went back to work for the first time
My own dr released me yesterday with a clean bill of health and said he didnt want
to see me again unless I had a problem, just check my coumadin every 3 months.
I had a St Jude mechanical valve that replaced my own valve, I didnt want to
have another operation thats why I settled on the mechanical valve, the only
dry back is the coumadin the rest of my life and I figured I could live with
that better then another operation. I suggest you find a qualified surgeon and
hospital that does this surgery on regular basis and not the local hospital and surgeon!
Good luck and write if you care to ask more questions.
