Steve,  I am a 44 year old who had my aortic valve leaking. they found the heart condition in Dec. 96.  I had open heart surgery in Aug. 97-a St. Judes Mechanical Valve was put in.  My surgeon said this was the best choice, since I had a small stroke in Jan 97 and would be on  coumadin all my life anyway, plus the mechanical valves last a lifetime. I was back to work in 9 weeks and feel better than I have for a long time.  If you are about that age that is probably what route they will go.  When is your surgery?  Will they do an angiogram first?  Good luck.  Don
