Thank you for your prompt reply to my question.  It was very helpful.  I am hoping that they can soon transfer my father to the hospital where the surgeon who will be operating on him is located so that we can get some of these questions about the risks of these various options answered.
We have not been told any hard numbers in terms of percent risks or anything to do with the surgery other than he is a "good candidate."  Whether a "good candidate" at 86 means he only has an 80% chance of survival or a 90% chance has not been communicated.  Plus his internist (specializing in cardiology) who is handling his case seems to be much more positive about his situation than the cardiologist he's had as a consultant.  I don't know which one to believe and would feel very relieved to hear the opinion of the actual surgeon that is already lined up at the other hospital but whom we have not yet met.
Today they did a radioactive dye test of his blood to see if there is any bleeding.  I'm hoping the results will show there is none so that he can get under the care of the surgeon who hopefully will have lots of expertise in cases just like this and be able to lay out the options as you described.  Why is it so hard to get information like this?  I've been asking questions all along but never get as much information from the doctors handling the case as I do from you on line!
Thanks again for your help.
