My 57 year-old father was recently diagnosed with having a carotid artery on the right side.  After angioplasty, the doctor found this artery to be completely blocked 100%.  We can't seem to get any answers as to what this actually means.  The doctor is not going to do surgery.  Since this, my dad has adapted a very strict diet of little or no fats, cholesterol, or sodium.  He quit drinking coffee completely, as there is also some sort of problem with one of his kidneys.  He is also gradually trying to quit smoking after 25 years.  Is there help for my dad?  What is the average life expectancy of someone with this situation?  Is surgery possible, or too risky?  What about blindness?
