Could you tell me the pros and cons of chelation therapy in a nutshell? Does it really work for the prevention of CAD and if you already have coronary blockages can it really reverse it? If so, how long does it take before the arteries clog up again? Is the procedure safe?
to add to this question - had a brother-in-law that underwent open heart surgery end of June this year (5-bypass) regaining health slowly and 6 weeks afterward, suffered a stroke - can back agian with walk, speech, and physical movement, but was told hat he has 50% blockage of the carotid artery.  Dr's want to operate, but I listen to NY radio station speaking of chelation and this would/should clear up the blockage along with diet and  supplements.

Dear Joann
I would not recommend chelation therapy. It is expensive and of no proven benefit. I believe it takes advantage of people that are ill, but looking for an easy solution to their problem.
Regarding the surgery, my only recommendation would be to go to a large medical center that has a lot of experience with carotid endarterectomy, as the complication rate is much higher when the procedure is performed by a surgeon that does not do many.
I wish you the best of luck.
If you would like to set up an appointment with one of our cardiologists here at the Cleveland Clinic please feel free to call 1-800-CCF-CARE.
