Recently my 12 year old daughter was experiencing rapid pulse and falling for no apparent reason.  After blood work and an EKG and an echocardiogram she was diagnosed with Prolapse Mitral Valve.  Is this a serious condition and is this typical for a 12 year old to have such a condition.  This diagnoses was made by our family physician.  Do you recommend  a second opinion by a cardiologist?  If the diagnoses is correct, what is the usual tratment for this condition?

Dear Joe
It is unlikely that mitral valve prolapse accounts for these symptoms. If your daughter is experiencing a fast heart rate and is passing out,  she should see a pediatric cardiologist.
I hope this has been useful. Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck.
