Hi                                                                                                                 Last week I had an echo done and these are the results.LADs 3.8 (n2.0-4.0);BSA 2.09m;LVIDd 5.8(n4.0-5.8);LVIDs 3.6; IVSd 1.1 (n0.8-1.2);LVPWd(n0.8-1.2);Ejection fraction 66.94% (n45.0-80.0);FS 37.63 (n20.0-40.0).Normal echocardiogram.Normal doppler.Normal blood pressure. On my echo before (this one) I had trivial mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation. On the last there was none,it was normal. The doctor told me, although my LVIDd is 5.8cm it is still within normal limits. He also told me that after a year, it could be 5.5cm or less.Questions:How significant is trivial tricuspid  and mitral valve regurgitation and is it possible to have (1 echo) it and than not (2 echo)? Can LVIDd of 5.8cm be regresed (by decreasing FIT and weight) to 5.5 or 5.0cm?  What does FS mean and what are normal limits for IVSs; LVPWs; RVDd; AOd; ALS?I am 45 yrs old male who is into fitness.Thank you. Anthony

: Dear Anthony,
Yes it is very usual for "trivial' leaks of the mitral and tricuspid valve to appear on one echo and not the other- MOST ESPECIALLY IN NORMAL INDIVIDUALS!!!
People who are in to fitness, athletes that is, often have heart sizes that are in the upper limits of normal. This concept is very well studied and it has never been shown to be a detriment to the athlete unless the measurements are way above normal.  I would consider your echo findings normal also and your doctor will need to give you the normal values that you ask for as they can vary from lab to lab and machine to machine.  Good Luck and great job staying in good health with regular exercise.  I hope that this information has been useful, please feel free to write back with any further questions.

On the 1 echo my left atrium was 4.0cm with normal limits of 2.0-4.0cm.Also on that echo report under the heading of left atrium/pulmonary veins says that "the left atrial cavity appears mildly dilated." On the 2nd echo (done at different doctor) LADs was 3.8cm with normal limits of 2.0-4.0cm.When I asked the doctor if left atrium was dilated he said no.Also on the 1st echo report under the heading of mitral valve says"mitral valve is normal. There is no mitral leaflet prolapse. There is trivial mitral regurgitation." And under the heading of tricuspid valve says"The tricuspid valve is normal. There is trivial regurgitation.Regurgitant velocity is 200.0cm/s and RV systolic pressure is 21mmHg."Questions.What does "The left atrial cavity apears mildly dilated " mean and is it enlarged because of trivial mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation?I kow that LVIDd enlarges because of physical activity(fitness) and LVPWd and IVSd follow to a lesser extent.Does  left atrium also enlarges with physical fitness on the level of LVIDd or LVPWd,IVSd?How significnt is tricuspid vale regurgitant velocity of 200.0cm/s and RV systolic pressure of 21mmHg?On the scale from 0 to 5 where would trivial tricuspid and mitral valve regurgitation be?And lastly can left atrium size be decreased?Thank you.Anthony
