Kristine, I am a 44 year old male who had my aortic valve replaced in Aug. 97, due to aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation and a leaking valve.  I was told I was born with the defective valve, but the situation worsened when I was 42.  They told me they really don't know if this was hereditary.  I was adapted, so there is no way of knowing for sure.  I had a St Judes Mechanical valve put in.  I feel better than I have for a long time.  I was off work for 9 weeks.  I was told these valves last a lifetime.  Good luck.       Don
