Two years ago I had open heart surgery.  I am 36 years old.  Now I am currently on a beta blocker, my blood pressure stays within normal range most of the time.  My pulse lately however has been on the high side, in the high 90's.  Should I be concerned?  What does a high pulse mean other than the fact you may be under stress?

Dear Dorothy,
Tachycardia is defined as any heart rate above 100 beats per minute, and it's
causes are varied and include but are not limited to fever, stress, pain, autonomic
instability, rare tumors, heart failure and heart attacks, etc.  Now it sounds as if your heart
rate although not technically tachycardic (above 100 beats a minute) is fast in comparison
to your usual rate.  It is pertinent that you see your physician regarding any change in
your health, especially anything you think might be cardiac related.  Whether your surgery
2 years ago was for blockages or a malfunctioning valve, you need regular follow up
with a cardiologist plus extra visits when there is a significant change in your blood pressure, heart
rate or just new symptoms.  Information provided in the Heart Forum is intended for general informational
purposes only, actual diagnosis and treatment can only be made by your physician(s).
