: My future husband has been complaining about a pain in his heart lately. At least that is what he says is feels like.  The pain is so intense that is actually takes his breath away he can barely breath for about a minute or so.  He says that after the pain stops his chest area is still sore..an achy feeling if he pushes on it.  He is only 23 years old. Not is great shape, but decent about 180 lbs. and he is 5'8".  This has been going on for a couple of months.  He doesn't want to see a doctor, but I believe this could be serious.  Any advice on what this may be would be greatly appreciated.  After all, we're not married yet, I do want my husband to be around in the future.
Thanks a Million,
Kim

Dear Kim,
Unfortunately there are many causes of "heart pain" ranging from a non life
threatening muscule related pain to a warning of heart attack or other life
threatening ailment of the heart.  Your fiancee needs to have his symptom(s)
evaluated by a doctor, this will involve a lot of questions and a couple of tests
if any; as this will depend on the history and physical examination I can not
predict the course of events.  Sometimes people are afraid of going to the doctors
office out of fear, please consider this when you ask your fiancee to see the
doctor.
