My son has IHSS and has gone through open heart surgery. My question
is the doctor said the name of the proceedure was a myotomy-myectomy,is
this the same as a septal myectomy? If not what is the difference?

Dear Joy, thank you for your question.  Myotomy, myectomy, and septal myectomy all refer to the same procedure.  In IHSS, the interventricular septum is too thick and bulges into the left ventricular cavity.  When blood is ejected from the left ventricle, the septal bulge obstructs blood flow and leads to the symptoms associated with IHSS (shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, etc.).  During a myectomy procedure, the septal bulge is surgically removed to relieve the obstruction to left ventricular emptying.  I hope your son's surgery was a success and I wish him and your family the best of luck.
