I have been told I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia.  What is it and how do you get rid of it?  I'm 25yrs old  it has been going on now for about 5 yrs.  Just in the last years or so it has become bad enought to seek Dr's treatment.  My heart rate will range from 42bpm to 192bpm.  Most of the time it will race when I stand up, walk, very rarely when I'm laying down.  I take 40mg of Corgard po q d.  My bad day far out way my good one.  Any Ideas?

Dear Mich, thank you for your question.  Inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST) has numerous causes, but is basically related to overactive neural connections to the heart that "speed up" the normal heart rate.  Corgard is a medication known as a beta blocker that is the mainstay of treatment for IST.  If you are still having symptoms and a fast heart rate on this treatment, then you should notify your physician for a reevaluation.  I am unable to give specific advice in this forum.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies. Please feel free to write back with additional questions.  Good luck!
