I was recently diagnosed with a mitral valve prolapse and a weakness in my
heart's septum.  The cardiologist said both of these were not serious.  He
said that for the septum thing, I would need another ECG in one year to see
how it was doing.  He also
said that I would have to take antibiotics before dental work but nothing
else was necessary.  Recently, I have been getting what I think are heart
palpitations.  I feel as strange sensation around my heart and then it pounds
one beat noticeably hard and goes back to normal.  Is there any incidence
of palpitations with a mitral valve prolapse or a weakness in the septum?
It has been happenening every day recently a bunch of times, is there a
chance it is just mental because I was diagnosed with those two problems?

Dear Brian, thank you for your question.  There is an association between mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and palpitations.  Palpitations are usually caused by premature beats of the atria or the ventricles of the heart and are almost always benign.  Premature beats are followed by a pause in the heart rhythm as it is resets; this is what causes you to feel like your heart is skipping beats after pounding hard.  Premature contractions do not portend a bad prognosis and may decrease if you eliminate tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine which can be precipitants.  I'm not quite sure what you mean by "weakness in the septum," but most likely, you may have a slight electrical conduction disturbance noted on your ECG that occurs in the area of the septum.  If that is true, then yearly ECGs are all you should need.  Again, this problem should not portend a bad prognosis.  Finally, stress can precipitate premature contractions so try to relax and not worry so much about these problems.

I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies. Please feel free to write back with additional questions.
