I am a 27 y.o male with no history of heart problems.  I do not drink, smoke or have excessive caffeine intake.  In the past year I have had 5 episodes of irregular heart beats.  They usually occur while I am calmly resting late in the evening.  On one occasion it occurred during strenuous outdoor work.  They involve a skipped beat followed by a hard beat.  They only last for about 10 minutes.  My pulse usually runs between 65-72.  When this arrhythmia is occuring, my pulse is around 47-51 (my pulse is not normally that low even while resting).  I have an abnormally narrow thoracic cavity due to pectus excavatum.  I recently had an EKG performed, however it was not interpreted by a cardiologist.  I have enough knowledge to know the P-R interval is increased (6 mm).  Also, the T-wave seems elevated (12 mm).  No arrhythmia was noted during the EKG.  My questions are as follows: (1).  Do you think that this is a PVC or a Sinus Arrhythmia?  (2).  Is there a chance that my pectus excavatum has anything to do with this?  (3).  Do the increased P-R interval and elevated T-wave have a contributing factor?  (4).  Is there any contraindication to me doing strenuous cardiovascular activity?   (5).  Is there an increased  likelihood of future heart problems?  Thanks for your time and service.

Dear T.D.
1. Sinus arrhythmia should not cause symptoms. It sounds like PVCs.
2. Pectus excavatum can cause xray and ekg abnormalities. Furthermore, it is associated with some heart problems.
3. Unlikely that these abnormalities are related to your symptoms.
4. Since one episode occurred with exertion, I think you should be evaluated with a treadmill exercise test before undertaking any strenuous activity.
5. It depends on whether you in fact have any underlying heart disease.
I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.
