Re: PVCs and PACs and Vagus Nerve and Hiatal Hernia

Re: PVCs and PACs and Vagus Nerve and Hiatal Hernia

After reading this forum and its comments on PVCs, PACs, etc.,
and doing much research on my own, I am strongly convinced that
my dysrhythmias and digestive difficulties are connected.  Two
years ago I was diagnosed with a sliding hiatal hernia and it
was at this same time that the PVCs started.  My cardiologist
seems to think otherwise, that they are from stress, difficulties,
etc. and that the two are coincidental.  I don't.  What is your
opinion on this and where does the vagus nerve fit into all of
this?
Thanks.

Dear Patricia
I agree with your cardiologist. I do not think that your hiatal hernia caused your PVCs. Despite what you might find posted on the internet, there is no proven connection between acid reflux or PVCs - both conditions are common and both are aggravated by stress. Thus both may coexist. The vagus nerve does supply the heart and help regulate the speed of the heart beat. Likewise, this nerve gives of branches that regulate stomach acidity. However, as appealing an explanation as it may seem, the two conditions are not linked.
I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.

Hi, I was interested to see this come up again. If you would like further information you might wish to go also to the Gastrointestinal Forum as well. There is quite a bit of correspondence there, and the doctor responding there said there is a connection between some GI symptoms and arrhythmias.
