I am diagnosed with severe mitral valve prolapse and am scheduled for surgery with Dr. Cosgrove in June.  I am currently taking 25 mg of Toprol and 5 mg Lisinopril twice daily.  When I first met with my cardiologist at the Clinic in February I explained I had had four episodes of what he says are premature beats (these lasted about 1 hour each).  I was put on these meds to help this condition, but it is getting worse.  I'm okay during the day, but as soon as I sit/lay down to rest, I get these premature beats for hours and therefore, cannot rest.  I understand they are harmless but they have definitely increased.  I am also getting extremely tired in the early evening and have to rest.
I would also like to know if water is retained anywhere in the abdomen area - not just in the ankles and how do I know if it is severe enough to contact the doctor.  I take Lasix according to my weight but at times whe I lay down (after traveling in a car) I feel like something is pushing up and I have to prop myself up on a pillow.  Could this be water retention?  Thank you for your help.  I have found so much comfort and information in this Forum and linked with someone who has had the same surgery with Dr. Cosgrove - thank you for your time.

I have also experienced excessive premature contractions.  While they are certain to be harmless, they are nevertheless uncomfotable.  They are sometimes painful and make it difficult for me to breath.  I developed panic disorder on top of the premature beats.  This makes things very difficult.  Try to stay positive.  Trust your doctors.  I myself am taking Atenolol to control the premature contractions.
