:     My mother is scheduled for a single by-pass and valve replacement surgery in two weeks....She is deliberating over what type of valve to go with. She is a healthy 69 year old, non-smoker, non-drinker. She is leaning towards getting a mechanical valve....Does anyone have any advice or experience to help in this decision? Thank you.
Don, I am a 44 year old male, and I am scheduled to have my aortic valve replaced on March 8th.  I am going with a mechanical valve....I hope that it is the only one that I have to have in my lifetime.  Best of luck to your mom.

Don, I am a 51-year old female (very young 51!) and am having my aortic valve replaced in 1-1/2 weeks due to congenital bicuspid valve.  I am also opting for the mechanical valve, St Judes.  Like Herb, I don't want to just mark time 'til the next surgery!

Susan:  A guy that I am dating had aortic valve replacement in November 1998.  He has a St. Judes mechanical valve and has to take coumadin forever.  His surgery went very well and he has not had a problem with Coumadin.  However, he did have a problem with Atrial Fibrillation (not sure of spelling).  Two or three weeks after the surgery his heart starting racing very fast and the beats were very irregular.  He is now on Lopressor (25 mg.) to keep his heart from racing and on Amioderone to help keep the beats regular.  Otherwise, everything is going well.
