I am donating blood for a Mitral Valve repair in early September. The ideal situation is to donate it within 1 month of surgery. The iron supplement is also helpful since when most people come off the heart lung machine, they are somewhat anemic because the machine is hard on the red blood cells.
Usually, the local blood banks will do this for you and they charge for the process. Here in San Diego the cost is $150 per unit.
