is laser angioplasty now being performed to clear severly blocked carotid arteries?  if so, where is the procedured performed in this manner.  if not, is carotid artery angioplasty and stenting the most successful currently.  should this procedure by performed by a vascular or neuro surgeon? thanks much.

The two options for carotid artery disease (other than medicines) are surgery (carotid endarterectomy) or carotid angioplasty/stenting. The surgical procedure is done by vascular surgeons or neurosurgeons, depending on the hospital. The stenting procedure is usually done by cardiologists. The most important thing is that whoever does the procedure should have the appropriate training. Which procedure is preferable depends on the specific patient situation.
