: Is it possible that the topical use of a hydro-cortisone cream could cause heart palpitations?  I have been using this cream for about 10 days, and just began to experience frequent "fluttering" sensations for about 12 hours.  I do not drink caffeine or alcohol, and I don't smoke.  I have discontinued use of the cream, but wonder if it could be related?

Dear Barbara, thank you for your question. I doubt that the hydrocortisone cream has caused
your palpitations.  Hydrocortisone cream can be absorbed systemically but are not associated
with palpitations.  You are correct in surmising that alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine can
cause palpitations but it appears that those are not related here.  I would check with
your physician who may be able to have you wear a portable heart monitor to document
your heart rhythym while the palpitations are occuring.  There may be other causes that
are not yet evident.
