hello doctors, I am on Tambocor (100mg BID) for chronic PAC's and PSVT (otherwise 25 yo healthy male).  The medication works 16 hours out of the day completely but my EP doc wants to increase the med by another 100mg/d (for a total of 300mg/d) so it works 24 hours out of the day.  Each time my Tambocor has been increased I get a stress test done because my doc said the higher dose may cause widening of the qrs interval which can lead to v tach.  I'm claustrophobic and he prescribed my diazepam (5-10mg) to take before the test to relax me.  My questions are:  1. is it ok to take diazepam with tambocor?  2.  Will the diazepam have any effect on my EKG since it works to relax muscles?  The pharmicist said to ask my doctor but he hasn't returned my calls.  thank you very much.

Dear Bob,
Thank you for your question.  It is always important to be aware of drug-drug interactions while on any cardiac medication.  In this case it is o.k. to take the diazepam prior to your test as a single dose prior to the procedure.  Diazepam does have potential cardiac effects, but if you take it just prior to your test you will be monitored throughout.  I would not recommend long term use of diazepam in combination with tambocor unless this were closely monitored.
I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.

thank you for such a speedy response.  I'm just curious though (i'm a scientist), would diazepam have any effects or potential effects on an EKG since it works on muscles and if so, what would they be?  thank you once again.   Bob
