Recommendations For High-Risk Pregnancy Specialist/Cardiologist

by brianna, Dec 29, 1999 12:00AM
I am a 35 year old female with some heart damage due to a moderate silent heart attack. My EF is 50% and I have normal coronary arteries as shown during a catheterization. I currently take 81mg. aspirin and 50mg. atenolol daily. I do not smoke or drink, although I am about 30lbs. overweight. I have no other medical conditions. My cardiologist thinks that the MI was caused by a blood clot, although I have been tested for clotting disorders with normal results. My only cardiac symptom is palpitations.

I would like to have a child (my 1st) in the near future after I lose some weight. Could you recommend a doctor/hospital in the Boston area with experience with pregnancy in women who have had a heart attack? What is the likely outcome of such a pregancy? Am I more likely to develop pregnancy-related cardiomyopathy?
Would I need a Caesarean delivery? Any info or guidance you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

While there are no cardiologists who specialize in pregnancy Dr. Pam Douglas at Beth Israel, Dr. Marie Gearheart, Dr. Paula Johnson at Brigham and Dr. Elaine Hylek at MGH are all Boston area cardiologists who have a special interest in women with cardiac disease.  They in conjunction with your OB can answer your questions concerning your risk and the best managment of your pregnancy.
