Recovery Rate

gentlepersons:
I have read that the recovery rate is a good way to determine the condition of ones heart and cardiovascular system. Is there a table that shows acceptable , good and so forth rates by age?
For example I measured my recovery rate at 28 based on a 60 second at rest time going from a rate of 157 to 129. My age is 59. Can someone tell me what this shows for me? Thanks.

Dear John,

You are absolutely correct that recovery heart rate is a good marker of one's "cardiac health".  The reference for this can be found in the October New England Journal of Medicine in an article from this institution by Cole et. al..  This article demonstrated that 1 minute recovery rates of 12 and higher were associated with a reduced risk of mortality over 6 years.

As I understand the first minute recovery (in the sudy) was measured at 1.5mph and 2.5grade after finishing a stress test. Can a results from stress echo (even though patient has to lye down and than sit after finishig) first minute recovery be used?By how many beats would the two measurements be different?Thank you.Billy

Within two weeks I am scheduled for repair of the root of my aorta -- I have cycstic medial necrosis. I will get a homograft during the surgery. My question is -- what are the aftereffects of the heart-lung bypass on my mental and physical capabilities. I have read comments about the negative effects this technique can have on one's cognitive abilities. Where can I find out more about the possible negative effects?
