Redundant Mitral Valve

My daughter who is 16 has been diagonosed as having a redundant mitral valve. (through a heart scan) My gp says it is nothing to worry about. I have read it is the same as mitral valve prolapse. Is this correct? My daughter was initially experiencing chest pain palpatations, heart pounding , shortness of breath, fatigue, heart racing. She now experiences chest pian whilst excercising at the gym. Is there anything I should be doing. Will her condition get worse?

Your GP is probably right but he/she is not a Specialist.  I'd take her to a Cardiologist.

Agree with the cardiology consult, if only for your questions to be answered by a specialist since you are concerned.

I have a redundant mitral valve. When I was teen I'd get atypical chest pains on ocassion and had some exercise breathlessness ( though part of it may be lack of conditioning as well). Today I can ride my bike for miles and miles without getting terribly winded ( at least sometimes ).Palpitations are common to everyone and to MVPers as well, as this is among the most common variations.

In most cases ( and I mean overwhelmingly most) this is an entirely benign condition that never gets any worse. Most MVPers have no symptoms at all and among the people who do have symptoms often people with the least prolapse complain of the most symptoms.

So best to speak to a cardio and take her Echo/scan (which was likely already read by a cardiologist) along and have it explained in person. If you once again get the "all clear" try not make much of it.  Just follow the guidelines you are given by the docs.

My GP first noticed a murmur when I was in my late teens and 20 years later I'm still here :-)

My son has it too and there is a genetic component that is variably penetrant I am told. We just take antibiotics before dental work. His is a bit worse than mine, but he doesn't complain of symptoms and doesn't fret about it.

Wishing you all the best .
