Regurgitation and arrhythmias

Thank you Dr. for your time and forum:)39F,3kids,suggestive but not definitive of mv prolapse.Trace regurg of mitral/tricuspid/pulmonic, which I was told may be seen in normals.(have been follwed since 1991 with yearly/every other year echos) Hx of pvc,pac caught on monitor.Episodes of increase in hr with gradual decrease. Monitor shows sinus tachy.Sometimes episodes of palpitations which feels like a few flutter feelings in a row then normal and perhaps again and leaves. No symptoms associated with it. This mainly occurs when feeling dehydrated and during allergy season but not often. Monitor shows either pvc or pac sometimes in bigemingy or trig. during those events. Have periods of times with no symptoms at all. Cardio says these symptomatic times just need to be worked through and are of no concern. Says I am healthy and heart is healthy.

Q-trace regurg in valves, can this indeed be a finding in normals?
Q-palpitations-several in a row, cause for concern?
Q-Been told dysautonomia(sympathetic),though orig. tilt test results were blunted. Can dysautonomia cause these varied symptoms and to come and go?
Q-Outside of controlling anxiety, increasing fluids, exercise, taking 12.5 of atenelol in a.m and p.m., any other suggestions to balance system?

Thank you again. Copay's for meds:costly  Reassurance from your service: priceless.  ;)

I am "ONLY" 34 years old, and I am a female with one child (did have some trouble getting pregnant but never used fertility drugs).  Now, I have been having this skipping heart beat (or Arrhythmias) for several years.  It seems to come and go.  I never know when to expect them...Recently I have been to the ER on 2 different occasions for them.  I just knew I was going to die.  My heart was out of control.  I am on Toprol XL for my blood pressure (am a bit overweight- 5ft. 5 and 200pounds).  I have been through every test in the book (since I work for Cardiologists)....I am BOUND AND DETERMINED to figure out why I have this....I am not crazy....I have completely and TOTALLY cut out my chocolate, and caffiene, etc.  Anything that could remotely cause this.  I am taking Fish Oil 3 times a day....and it seems like I, too, have these worse when I have indigestion - and about a week before my period.  I wonder if it could be hormonal?  I have been to doctor after doctor - everyone says I am ok.  This is causing me terrible anxiety.  I have knots in my back from tension (I guess).  My husband rubs my back to help with the knots and the trapped gas, and that seems to help - but at night - I can't even sleep.....I sit up in the Recliner and try to sleep - I can't lay down, it skips, and I just jump up, and I freak out, and I cry, etc.  I am miserable!!!  Just worried to death.

Man, I am so glad I happed upon this site.  I feel so much better.  I am 36, busy mom, overweight, but solid build, herniated disc in back, so just becoming active again.  On 100mcg Synthroid for hypothyroidism and 25mg Hydrochlorothiazide for mild elevation periods in blood pressure.  I have been getting PVC's for about 8 years now and never knew what it was until last year.  I have wore halters before, had ECG's, EKG's, done the treadmill test and all that and nothing conclusive has come out of it except PVC's.  I get flutters with the PVC's frequently and it scares the heck out of me.  Doctors have also told me they're nothing and very common, but when I am having episodes, I think they're all missing something and start that thinking that I'm going to die.  Then I won't have them for a long time...weird.  Anyway, what triggered me to write is that I, too, have them way worse with indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux.  I find simple Rolaids help and I'm off to sleep.  But because of the fluttering and the heartburn, it is easy to lie there and think it is all your heart.  Also, my week before menstruating, I get them worse.  Thanks so much for this site...hearing all of your stories makes me feel much better.

This is my 4th day on Toprol XL 12.5 mg in the am. The MD said 25 mg per day but I want to get use to it for a week or two. He said it can effect my asthma. If no problems I will increase to the 25 mg. I haven't noticed any changes in my palpitations, good or bad, but I'm hoping it will help. I started haveing them daily about 4 - 6 weeks ago. They are driving me crazy. I am also seeing a shrink, 7th visit today. MD recommended because he can't find any medical problems with me so"it must be anxiety". I am 42 yo male. Never had problems with PVC's until last month. They started a week after 6 weeks of broncitis. MD said that may have triggered it, who knows? What ever started them, they scare the he@# out of me, at times. Hopefully the Toprol will start helping.

Forgot, also on Ativan, 1 mg as needed. I need it all the time, but I try to limit it to 1 pill every other day, I don't want to get addicted.

One more thing, my wife of 9 years has had PVC's here and there, 2 years ago since her last short episode, 2 - 3 weeks long. The same week I started getting them hers started, and they are daily. Any thoughts on this. The doctor did a 24 hour moniter to confirm them. He said they are single and innocent.

Could this be sympothy stress causing them, seems weird to me.

Hi Fearfactor,

I wore an event monitor a long time ago for a long time. I caught so many pvc/pacs, tachycardia and the bigeminy or trig. I know that because I would get a copy of the report sent to me also.(of the reading itself) and on it said sinus rhythm with bigeminy(I think or it was trig)otherwise when I called the transmission in they just told me I had pac or pvc I don't remember which.

It is just when these darn things start up again, they start the darn fear cycle over and over again, especially the older I get. The episode I had yesterday was with a few in a row, then I was ok and as I kept walking a few more in a row, normal then a few more. I thought I should just lay down on the floor and call 911 but I pushed through and they did stop. My heartrate stayed up in the high 80's/90's for quite a while after. I am still sitting here today waiting for it to happen again. I've had a few skips today, enough to make me nervous.

That's what happens after a symptom free period, wham,,it hits back hard!! Yikes!!

Hope you are holding well:)

I have MVP also and am constantly bothered by palpitations. I take Toprol right now, but it really doesn't seem to do much. Can palpitations cause other symptoms such as dizziness and nausea.

Hi,

I have not had any problems with atenelol. It works well, I've not noticed side effects taking 25mg. I split it, 12.5a.m and 12.5 p.m. Anymore, then I start to feel tired. It helps me with my sometimes fast heartrate, and it does tend to quiet the palpitations although not always to nothing. I get periods where I experience few palpitations and sometimes they come back for a while.

All in all it has worked well and I have taken it for quite a number of years.

Hope it works for you!

Hi - I have almost the SAME symptoms and test results as you!  I have trace tricuspid and mitral valve regurge, but my cardio says it's a variation of normal.  I have the stupid pacs/pvcs and the ones that seem like a bunch in a row but they've never been caught on a monitor.  I always suspected bigeminy - you said yours were caught and they were bigeminy.  Mine sort of feel like a big PVC followed by a fluttering feeling.  Is that what you experience?  I'm just trying to figure out what it is because I can't seem to catch it on a monitor!  What the doctor said is very reassuring!

I started getting extreme dizzy spells, over a year ago. It was the search for the cause of the dizziness that eventually led to the MVP diagnosis.
I have been told by some medical people that the dizziness can be from the MVP,  but my own Cardiologist said it was not the MVP but it was "vascular". It's no longer all day long and I get the spells now only when I cross my legs or ankles, stand on tip toe, stuff like that.
What did your doctor tell you about your dizziness ?

I get them wortse with heartburn. I recently ran out of my aciflux an they got worse. I also get very nervous and tremble when I have some. I'm glad there are other people who understand this. It sucks when the md tells you your fine, and says its anxiety. please write anytime you want to. Even if your just stressing out. I check my email several times per day.

I also notice an increase in palpitations with reflux. When I am having a good dose of reflux the palps will act up. Even tachycardia seems to be triggered sometimes by reflux. Or after a bad bout I will burp.  The vagus nerve has a lot to do with it I think.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
dande,

thanks for the post.

Q-trace regurg in valves, can this indeed be a finding in normals?

Absolutely, and very common.

Q-palpitations-several in a row, cause for concern?

The key is what your monitor shows. If its PVCs/PACs with your normal cardiac evaluation, there wouldnt be too much I would pursue further.

Q-Been told dysautonomia(sympathetic),though orig. tilt test results were blunted. Can dysautonomia cause these varied symptoms and to come and go?

Unfortunately, this term gets thrown around a lot. To mee it sounds more like simple palpitations, which are very common as you might find if you delve into the past post on this board.

Q-Outside of controlling anxiety, increasing fluids, exercise, taking 12.5 of atenelol in a.m and p.m., any other suggestions to balance system?

Dont worry so much about this for someone with anxiety issues palpitations frequently become an unhealthy point at which to focus thier anxiety.

good luck.

Live healthy, enjoy liffe.

good luck
