Restenosis Odds

by George__0__0, Dec 18, 1998 12:00AM

My cardiologist gives me general odds of restenosis of 30 percent, which
I take to be an average of averages. However, I have read that the
restenosis probility can change depending on the length of the stent,
and I perceive that the restenosis rate is probably related to the total
area -- not volume -- of the stent.
I have two stents in my LAD -- both 3mm in diameter -- one is 13mm in
length and the other is 23mm in length and both are ACS Multi-link RX Duet.
What would be more realistic odds of restenosis on the longer stent?  I am
anticipating that it would be higher than 30 percent.

Dear George,
Ask 100 cardiogists and you'll probably get at least 25 different answers, thus
the best information is that which you received because it came from all the current experience across the world.  Some studies suggest that your restonsis rate is even less likely if you received a platelet inhibitor at the time of your stent placement, and you're right that the longer the stent, the more likely restenosis, however it has to do with total surface area and not so much volume.  Of course this 'restenosis' problem is still that a problem since it is incompletely understood.  There are ongoing research trials aimed at diminishing restenosis as you may know, in the meanwhile you should be concerned about eating right and exercising daily to maintain your health and NOT on your EXACT risk for restenosis which even if we knew, there would be nothing different we could recommend.
I hope this information is useful. Information provided in the heart forum is for
general purposes only.  Only your physician can provided specific diagnoses and therapies.
Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck!
