Could you explain what the AO 96.0 and RV 80.0 are relevent to or what they might indicate, a TEE was said to be normal after the cath, so he did not do a bubble study. Would this be causing my shortness of breath and cause elevated pulmonary pressures (36/15). Is it possible to miss a defect on an echo and a cath?

Dear knight,
These are oxygen saturation numbers that indicate how much oxygen is in the blood. The aortic (AO) sample has a higher oxygen content because it is just coming out from the lungs. NOrmal range is between 93 and 100%. The right ventricular (RV) number is lower because it has just returned from the body and is about to enter the lungs. Normal RV oxygen saturation is between 70 and 85%. If the RV oxygen saturation is elevated this may indicate abnormal blood flow from the left side of the heart to the right side of the heart (shunt). A bubble study demonstrates shunts using micro bubbles that cross the shunt and may be seen during a TEE (transesophageal echo). It would be unlikely to miss a significant shunt on both cath and echo. There are many other things that can cause mildly elevated pulmonary pressures besides shunts such as valvular disease, lung disease, primary pulmonary hypertension and normal variant.
