Right side chest pain

by susanleet, Jun 18, 2009 11:59AM
My 16 year old plays football and basketball. He has recently complained of right side chest pain after exercise.  The pain lasts up to an hour.  He has no shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing.  Suggestions?

Unlikely to be coronary artery disease, but may be muscular ( most common), lung or GI in nature. It may be also related to his back as referred nerve pain. I would suggest that he gets evaluated by his pediatrician with at least an EKG to make sure there is no structural heart disease.

Probably just cramping of muscles between the ribs, or perhaps a muscle pull. If he has no other accompanying symptoms, I wouldn't worry. If he can modify the pain by pressing on his rib cage or by bending or stretching, then it is most certainly muscular.
