Runs of Skipped Beats

Runs of Skipped Beats

I am a 45 year old healthy woman.  I was wondering if you could tell me if this is common?  I get in the area of around 100 skips beats daily.  Some are little flutters, some are jolts, some are fluttery sensation and then a HUGE thump.  There are sometimes occasions where my heart just seems to lose its rythum and skip every couple of beats or so and then maybe every minute for an hour or so.  There is no real pattern to what the heck it does.  I have been seen by a cardiologist and there are no problem with my heart they have told me.  I have heard of people that get random skips throughout the day but they scare the heck out of me when I get them every couple of beats and then just go away.  Is this something that a person should be concerned about?  The cardio I saw said they don't even worry when they are every other beat if a person has a normal heart?  What would your comments be on that?

Palpitations are common and usually are not something that is to be worried about. You have done the correct thing in discussing this with your physician. If these continue there are several things which can be considered. First a holter monitor is sometimes helpful in determining the exact cause of the palpitations. Also, medications such as beta blockers can be helpful in reducing the frequency of the feeling. Finally, limiting caffeine and decongestant medications may also help reduce these feelings.
