SAM and HSM?

I was recently told that I have SAM of the mitral leaflet with mild 10 mm obstruction and HSM? Also Dr said the septum wall was thickened. He is sending me to someone else to see if they think I need an ICB and Beta Blocker. My mother died from IHSS when she was 49 . I really don't know where to go and find good detailed information on all these acryonyms? Can someone help me?

IHSS (idiopathic hyperstrophic subaortic stenosis) is the old name for HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). HCM is usually passed on genetically. SAM is systolic anterior motion and is used to describe the motion of the mitral valve. When the mitral valve touches the septum, you have an obstruction. (HCM presents as obstructed or non-obstructed.) The 10 you refer to is probably your gradient, and if so, that is a low gradient. A normal gradient is 0. The ICB you refer to is probably an ICD which is an internal cardiac defibrillator used to automatically shock your heart rhythm if you experience a potentially fatal rhythm disturbance. If you google hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, you will find alot of information. Cleveland Clinic has one of a few HCM specialty clinics in the US.
