My husband has cirrhosis of the liver, hep. C & is on a transplant list. He has now been diagnosed with 'secondary pulmonary hypertension'. His pressure was at 100% & it MUST be down to 30% before they will consider a liver transplant. He's hooked up to a 'Hickman' line now & is receiving FLOLAN!! (whew...very expensive meds!!
Is anyone out there familiar with this condition??

sbps, sorry to hear of your husbands illness.
pulmonary hypertension refers to elevated pressures in the lung. It can be associated with alot of different conditions including the heart. The pulmonary hypertension that occurs in cirrhosis is not from the heart, and the mechanisms are unclear.
Flolan is a type of medicine that lowers the lung pressures in some patients.

I am so sorry about your husbands problem, I was wondering if you have any suggestions for me. My best friend who is 40 years old was diagnosed about 5 years ago with cryptogenic cirrohsis of the liver she has been on a transplant list. recently they have discovered she has pulmonary hypertension they are not sur why, they had a meeting about her and decided to remove her from the list, they said with the ph the danger of a transplkant is to great and they needed to treat the ph first. they called yesterday and have said they can't treat the ph and to just live her life basically there is nothing we can do for you... they are afraid that with the medications they use she could bleed to death. Her liver has made new portals and has not changed much in the last 5 years I am so confused, she is being seen at stanford. Do you have any suggestions? The doctors there said exercise was good then a site online sdaid not to exercise we would like to see a new Dr. even if it means going out of the area. my email is ***@****
