Seeking advice after PACE maker implantation

My grandmother was initially told by cardiologist to implant a PPM because her heart was weak and could stop working anytime. So she has undergone a surgery to implant a Pace maker.

Since then she could not able to recover at all and her condition getting deteriorated with passing days and currently she is in ICU on a ventilator and just yesterday she was isolated on basis that she is prone to catch new infection.


Cardiologist informed that pace maker is working absolutely okay and he not observed any complication from the pace maker implantation. Now she is been treated by Pulmonologist because she was diagnosed with chest infection after 5-6 days of implantation.

Case Summary

Dated: 28th April 2011

75 years old female with diabetes mellitus (DM), HTN, Remote symptomatic epilepsy came to ICU on 24th April with short of breath & generalized weakness.

Initially managed as community acquired pneumonia. Surgical placement of PPM placement on 12 April 2011. Her BNP>35000, Trop-I 0.06/0.11, ABG's showing respiratory acidosis, CXR showing new infiltrates Rt lower zone. She is on Tazocin currently; TLC coming down, blood c/s, urine c/s, sputum re-culture result awaited. She was not tolerating BiPAP & retaining PCO2, so planned to incubate & now on ventilator as well.


Reason for writing to you to seek expert suggestion because we feel that she is not properly treated by the doctors. I presume both Cardiologist and Pulmonologist are to some extent unaware about the condition and cause of the disease.
