Septicemia and Acute MI

by Carol-Cornet, Aug 13, 1998 12:00AM

Can septicemia cause a 69y.o man to have a MI and if so how can it be prevented.  Also would septicemia cause a K+ level to be elevated 6.3  Thanks for your help.

Dear Carol
True sepsis is a serious disease that has a high fatality rate. Sepsis can cause many metabolic derangements, including elevation of potassium. Sepsis, especially at its end-stage, can cause cardiac dysfunction. Also, the stress of sepsis can sometimes cause a heart attack in people with underlying heart disease.
I hope this is useful. Good luck. Feel free to write back with further questions.
